Valcyte in SOT

Valcyte® (valganciclovir HCl tablets) offers the power to protect against the dangers of CMV. Valcyte is approved for the prevention of CMV disease in kidney, heart and kidney-pancreas solid organ transplantation (SOT) patients at high risk.

Valcyte contains valganciclovir, a hydrochloride salt of the L-valyl ester of ganciclovir that exists as a mixture of two diastereromers. Ganciclovir is a synthetic guanine derivative active against cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Valcyte has been commercially available since 2001 for the treatment of CMV retinitis in HIV. It was first approved for use in SOT patients in 2003.

Ganciclovir bioavailability of ≈60% with once-daily dosing
Systemic Ganciclovir Exposure
Mean ganciclovir exposure 1.7 times that of oral ganciclovir
Indications
For the prevention of CMV disease in kidney, heart, and kidney-pancreas transplant patients at high risk
Efficacy
Effective in preventing CMV disease in high-risk (D+/R-) SOT patients
Safety
Safety profile similar to that of ganciclovir
Dosing
Valcyte offers the convenience of once-daily dosing
